Do charter boat captains need a USCG license?
Yes. The moment any passenger pays to be aboard, federal law requires the operator to hold a USCG credential — for six or fewer paying passengers, that's the OUPV, universally called the '6-pack' license. It requires 360 days of documented sea time, a Coast Guard exam, a physical, a drug test, and a TWIC background check.
Does someone need a license to drive my own boat for me?
If your guests ride free, hiring a captain for your own boat is a private trip with professional crew — no federal license is strictly required. But there's a trap: if guests chip in for gas or anything else, the trip legally becomes a charter and the full licensing regime applies. We hold ourselves to the USCG standard on every trip so that line never gets crossed by accident.
Do I need a license to drive a boat in Washington State?
Washington doesn't license recreational boaters, but most operators need a Boater Education Card to legally drive a boat with 15+ horsepower. Holders of a USCG captain's credential are exempt — the federal license exceeds the state requirement.
What is a '6-pack' captain?
Slang for the USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) credential, which allows carrying up to six paying passengers on an uninspected vessel. Six is a hard federal cap — a wake boat with 14 seats is still limited to 6 paying guests.
Why does drug testing matter for a boat captain?
Commercial captains are federally required to enroll in random drug-testing programs — the same regime as working mariners on tugs and ferries. It's one of the clearest lines between a professional operation and a guy with a boat and a Venmo.
