How much does it cost to hire a boat captain in Seattle?
For your own boat: $119/hour weekdays, $139/hour weekends with a 6-hour minimum (about $714–834 for a full day). For a boat you rented: $129/hour. Event days run flat: $849–1,199 depending on the day. Captained charters that include a boat run $275–340/hour in this market — the biggest cost in a charter is the boat, which is why using yours is the smart move.
Do I need a license to drive my own boat in Washington?
Washington doesn't issue boat 'licenses' for recreational use, but most operators need a Boater Education Card to drive anything 15 horsepower or more. It's a one-time education card, not a skills test — which is exactly why confident, skilled driving is a separate thing you can hire.
Is it legal to pay someone to drive my boat?
Yes — hiring professional crew for your own recreational boat is legal and common. The one bright line: your guests must genuinely ride free. If guests pay or chip in, the trip becomes a charter under federal law and full commercial rules apply. We structure every booking on the right side of that line.
Can my guests drink alcohol on board?
Passengers may drink on a private boat in Washington; the law cares about the operator. BUI (boating under the influence) applies to whoever is driving — with a professional captain at the helm, your entire party gets to be passengers.
Can someone else drive a boat I rented?
On peer-to-peer platforms, renters can generally arrange their own USCG-credentialed captain, and some premium listings require one. The renter selects and pays the captain separately from the boat — a structure we handle correctly on every rental booking.
Do wakesurf boats have to stay away from shore?
Yes. Local codes on Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish restrict towing within 100 yards of shore and cap speeds near docks, bridges, and swimmers — and towed watersports are entirely prohibited on Lake Union. Washington also requires an observer aboard, a PFD on the rider, and no towing between an hour after sunset and an hour before sunrise.

How do you tie up to the Seafair log boom?
Slow bow-in approach, bow lines to the boom, fenders both sides, and raft to your neighbors as the row fills. It's the most demanding tie-up most owners will ever attempt, one weekend a year, surrounded by other people doing it for the first time. Or we do it while you host.
How does Husky sailgating work?
On UW home-game Saturdays, boats raft up in Union Bay outside Husky Stadium and fans walk or shuttle to the gates. You bring the boat and the tailgate; moorage is managed game-day; we drive, moor, keep the boat, and run everyone home after — including after night games.
When is wakesurf season in Seattle?
Comfortably mid-May through mid-September, with July and August as peak glass. Shoulder-season sessions are absolutely doable with wetsuits — and the event side of our calendar (sailgating, Christmas Ships, NYE) runs the rest of the year.
When is crab season in Seattle?
Puget Sound recreational crabbing typically opens in early July (weekend-only in central Sound areas) through Labor Day, with select areas reopening October 1 for winter. Exact areas and days are set by WDFW each year — a captained crabbing day means someone runs the boat and pots while your crew does the fun part.
